GLASS FROM THE CENTRE

Our new Exhibition in the Upper Gallery features a stunning display of contemporary glass by selected artists from the Ruskin Glass Centre in Stourbridge, where this year celebrates 400 years of glass making in the town.

The Exhibition continues until July 14th 2012.

Glass from the Centre showcases the work of studio glass artists based at the Ruskin Glass Centre in Stourbridge, West Midlands.
This year marks the 400th year of glass-making in Stourbridge, and the Ruskin Glass Centre forms a bridge from the region’s historic glass industry to the contemporary studio glass displayed here.
The Centre has a prestigious past, as the site was once home to the glass trade greats of Webb Corbett and Royal Doulton.  A number of local craftspeople who were part of this glass trade can still be found at work – including one third generation glass cutter.  Many of these “glass masters” now teach students at the Glasshouse College, which shares the site.
Following a £1.4m refurbishment (thanks to funding from Advantage West Midlands), the location that was once home to glass trade greats now houses a thriving community of smaller creative businesses.  Working alongside the artists on show in Glass from the Centre are engravers, glass decorators, and glass repair specialists – as well as more diverse workshops specialising in everything from textiles to photography.
Visitors over the August Bank Holiday weekend are in for a special treat: The Centre will play host to the fifth International Festival of Glass and to the British Glass Biennale – and the whole of the Stourbridge Glass Quarter will come alive in celebration of a magical material.
Ruskin Glass Centre is open to visitors Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm.  Visitors can browse, watch artists at work or even commission their own piece of art.  The Centre’s cafe serves drinks, cakes and a quality seasonal breakfast and lunchtime menu.
